Adapted from the old Hispanic legend of La Llorona, or "The Crying Woman", La Leyenda de la Llorona is a flash animated horror-adventure-comedy directed by Alberto Rodriguez. Beto and his sister Kika are trick or treating, when Beto notices an eerie figure in the deserted streets. Trying to save Kika, Beto calls out "Llorona's" name, and the ghost chases after him.

Five companions arrive via balloon: Leo San Juan, a young boy; Don Andres, an old knight; Alebrije, a fire-breathing colorful dragon; Moribunda and Finado, two skeletal kids. They are responding to a letter sent by their old friend Padre Tello, asking for help. At one point, Leo falls out of the basket and is saved by Kika.

Leo wakes up in the house of Kika's mother. While under her care, he hears the story of "Llorona". In the village Xochimilco, a woman named Yoltzin lived with her two children, Ollin and Toinatiuh. One day, the family returned to find their home on fire. Trying to save her home, Yoltzin left her children on the boat and swam to shore to try to put the fire out. When she turned around, the boat, and her children, were gone. Days later, the two were found dead. The grief drove Yoltzin mad and after her death, the sorrowful moans of a woman were heard throughout the village. Yoltzin was now Llorona, the Crying Woman. She now haunts the land, and captures unattended children to quell her loneliness.

Leo's friend, Padre Tello, has been searching for a way for years to appease Llorona. When Leo left with Tello's journal, Kika followed, but was caught by Llorona.

Meanwhile, Leo's friends have discovered where Llorona can be found. The small troupe wish to reunite Llorona with the souls of her dead children so that the little ones she has captured over the years might be set free and her spirit finally laid to rest.
