WataMote, produced by Silver Link and directed by Shin Oonuma; with scripts written by Takao Yoshioka; debuted on July 9th 2013, following Nico Tanigawa's manga series of the same name. Sentai Filmworks released an English dub for this series as well.
Tomoko Kuroki, 15, is an unsociable high school girl who struggles to make friends due to social anxiety issues and difficulty communicating. Tomoko spends much of her free time playing video games and watching anime much to the displeasure of her parents and spending her free time watching videogames and anime instead of socializing properly with people around her. Tomoko desires being popular but is prevented from becoming so by her overbearing actions and social anxiety which prevents this goal being reached.
Over the course of this series, Tomoko makes attempts at becoming more popular and finding happiness at high school. She attempts to alter her appearance, join clubs and go out on dates - yet due to extreme shyness and social skills deficiencies she finds herself embroiled in embarrassing situations which cause failure and depression - leading her to perceive herself as worthless failures.
WataMote may appear humorous at times, yet its themes of social anxiety, depression and fitting in can be profound. Tomoko's struggles are realistically presented and relatable for viewers who may have encountered similar difficulties at high school.
WataMote features animation and character designs that stand out from its peers, creating an appealing viewing experience for its audiences. Its backgrounds and settings are captivatingly realistic while voice actors convincingly convey each character's emotions via expressive performances. Furthermore, its soundtrack adds another level of immersion by setting the scene for each scene of this series.
Izumi Kitta's portrayal of Tomoko Kuroki stands out, skillfully conveying her awkwardness and insecurity while conveying emotion effectively. Additionally, supporting cast members Ayaka Asai and Monica Rial also give memorable performances, breathing life into their respective characters.
