The Night Of is an American crime drama television miniseries which premiered on HBO back in 2016. Directed by Steven Zaillian and James Marsh, and inspired by Peter Moffat's 2008 BBC show Criminal Justice. Over eight episodes it follows Riz Ahmed's character Nasir Khan (Naz) who finds himself accused of murder after partying with an unknown individual during one evening in New York City.
The Night Of opens with Nasir, a college student from Queens borrowing his father's taxi and heading off to an event with Andrea, played by Sofia Black-D'Elia. While at the party he meets an intriguing stranger named Andrea whom invites him back home; but all hell breaks loose when when he awakes covered with blood to find Andrea brutally murdered in bed and panics leaving. However he eventually escapes her apartment only to be charged and arrested later for murdering Andrea.
As we progress through this series, we watch Nasir struggle to prove his innocence against the complex American justice system. Ahmed is joined by an impressive supporting cast including John Turturro as Naz's defense attorney John Stone; Bill Camp as Detective Box - lead investigator; and Michael Kenneth Williams who plays Freddy Knight at Rikers Island who becomes his mentor and protector.
The Night Of is an engaging slow-burn series about justice that emphasizes its shortcomings over just murder cases themselves. Over eight episodes, we explore both procedural and ethical considerations surrounding each trial while looking into why criminal justice systems often fail innocent parties. Furthermore, The Night Of also shines light upon American prison system's bureaucratic structure while showing its often negative repercussions for people's lives.
One of the show's hallmarks is how slowly it unveils more about each character - from Detective Box's troubled past, Naz's family life and Stone's battles with eczema - all to Naz and Stone revealing more and more each episode as their stories unravel further. These characters are brilliantly written and performed - each having its own motivations and inner demons to deal with; all this creates tension as episodes build upon one another creating tension as stories progress forwards.
The Night Of is both narratively compelling and visually arresting, offering stunning shots of New York's often dangerous streets. The cinematography perfectly captures New York City's atmosphere for maximum authenticity in storytelling and realism.
Overall, The Night Of is an outstanding miniseries which explores complex issues related to American justice system. A thought-provoking yet emotionally engaging drama that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats from beginning to end; The show leaves audiences with greater insight into criminal justice system as a result of watching it.
The Night Of is currently airing its eighth episode and has 1 season so far (in its current iteration). The series first debuted on July 10, 2016.
